Unidad carries both a concrete sense ('a unit of measurement or military unit') and an abstract sense ('unity, cohesion'). Unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI) is the Spanish equivalent of 'ICU'. The word is always feminine despite ending in a consonant, following the -dad pattern.
