Subsuelo refers to the layer of earth below the topsoil, important in geology, agriculture, and mining. In legal and political contexts it appears in phrases like los recursos del subsuelo ('subsoil resources'), which are often state-owned under Spanish and Latin American constitutions. Not to be confused with sótano (basement).
