submarino

submarine

noun soob-mah-REE-noh Less Common

Usage Note

Submarino functions both as a noun (the vessel) and as an adjective (cable submarino, 'submarine cable'). In Argentina and Uruguay, a submarino is also a hot drink made by submerging a bar of chocolate in warm milk — a decidedly non-military usage. The prefix sub- (under) + marino (marine) makes the word fully transparent.

Examples

"El submarino navegó bajo el océano."

Natural Translation

The submarine navigated under the ocean.
