satélite

satellite

noun sah-TEH-lee-teh Rare

Usage Note

Satélite can be natural (la Luna es un satélite natural de la Tierra) or artificial (satélite de comunicaciones). As an adjective it means 'satellite' in the sense of a dependent or subordinate entity: ciudad satélite ('satellite town'). The written accent on the second syllable marks the unusual stress — three syllables from the end.

Examples

"El satélite orbita la Tierra cada hora."

Natural Translation

The satellite orbits the Earth every hour.
