Salpicado is the past participle of salpicar (to splash, to sprinkle) used adjectivally. It can be literal — a wall splattered with paint — or figurative: un discurso salpicado de errores (a speech peppered with mistakes). It commonly takes the preposition de: salpicado de estrellas (dotted with stars).
