Usage Note
Roca refers to rock as a solid material or a large rocky outcrop, distinguishing it from piedra (a loose stone you could pick up). Roca is uncountable when referring to the mineral substance (suelo de roca — rocky ground) but countable for a specific formation (una roca enorme). The adjective rocoso (rocky) derives from it.
