Usage Note
Resfriado is the common noun for a head cold; catarro (m) is a close synonym used across the Spanish-speaking world. In Spain resfriado is standard; in parts of Latin America gripe (f) can be used more loosely for any cold-like illness. The verb is resfriarse ('to catch a cold'). Note also the adjective resfriado ('having a cold') used with estar.
