redonda

whole note (music)

noun rreh-DOHN-dah Rare

Also means

surrounding area, region

Usage Note

Redonda has two main uses: in music it is the whole note (semibreve in British English), the longest common note value; in the phrase a la redonda it means 'around, in the surrounding area' — no hay nadie a dos kilómetros a la redonda (there's no one within two kilometers around). In typography, redonda also refers to upright (roman) type as opposed to italic.

Examples

"El compás empieza con una redonda."
