reconocido

recognised, acclaimed

adjective rreh-koh-noh-SEE-doh Less Common

Also means

acknowledged

Usage Note

Reconocido as a free adjective means 'widely acknowledged or respected': un médico reconocido ('a renowned doctor'). It is the past participle of reconocer, which also means 'to recognise a person visually', so context distinguishes the two readings. Do not confuse with conocido ('known, familiar'), which lacks the sense of public esteem or formal acknowledgement.

Examples

"Es un escritor reconocido en todo el mundo."

Natural Translation

He is a writer recognised all over the world.
