Usage Note

Páramo denotes a high, wind-swept, treeless plateau — the ecological zone above the tree line in the Andes (Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela) and in the Spanish meseta. In Colombia the Andean páramos are critical water sources. Figuratively, un páramo describes any desolate, inhospitable place.
