Usage Note
Promedio is a direct cognate of 'average' and is used in both statistical (promedio de edad) and everyday contexts (en promedio = 'on average'). Unlike media (the arithmetic mean in strict mathematical usage), promedio is acceptable in all registers. The phrase por encima del promedio ('above average') is very common in news and academic writing.
Examples
"El promedio de temperatura este mes fue alto."
Natural Translation
The average temperature this month was high.
