Usage Note

Platanera refers to the banana plant itself (Musa spp.), while plátano is the fruit. In Spain plátano is the standard fruit name; in much of Latin America banana or banano is preferred for the sweet fruit. Platanera can also refer to a banana plantation. The word bananero is a Latin American equivalent.
