Usage Note

Pilastra is an architectural term for a flat column or rectangular pier projecting slightly from a wall, providing decorative or structural support. Unlike a free-standing columna, a pilastra is always attached to a surface. It is common in Renaissance and Baroque buildings throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
