Usage Note

Pasaporte entered Spanish from French passeport (passe 'pass' + port 'gate/port'). Sacar el pasaporte means 'to get a passport' (apply for one), while renovar el pasaporte is 'to renew it'. The word is masculine; don't confuse with tarjeta de identidad (ID card), a separate document.
