nuez

walnut

noun NWEHS Rare

Origin: Latin nux (nut)

Also means

nut

Usage Note

Nuez specifically refers to a walnut in most of Spain, but is used generically for 'nut' in many contexts and compounds. Note the spelling change in the plural: nueces (-z → -ces). La nuez de Adán is the Adam's apple. Nuez moscada is nutmeg — a common culinary false friend since it is not actually a walnut.

Examples

"El pastel lleva nueces y miel."

Natural Translation

The cake has walnuts and honey.
