Usage Note
Niña is the feminine counterpart of niño ('boy'); together los niños can refer to children of any gender. In Spain, niña is also an affectionate address to a young woman, and in the Caribbean it is used to call an adult woman familiarly. The idiom ser la niña de los ojos de alguien ('to be the apple of someone's eye') uses the word in the sense of the pupil of the eye.
