Usage Note

Negociar covers both diplomatic negotiation (negociar un tratado) and commercial trade or dealing (negociar en bolsa = 'to trade on the stock exchange'). The noun negociación means 'negotiation'; negocio means 'business' or 'deal'. Note the spelling: the -ciar ending requires -cié (not -ció) in the preterite first person: negocié.
