morir

to die

verb moh-REER Common

Origin: From Latin mori (to die).

Usage Note

Morir has an irregular past participle: muerto (not morido). The stem changes o→ue in the present (muero, mueres…) and o→u in the preterite third persons (murió, murieron). The reflexive morirse adds emotional intensity or informality (¡me muero de hambre!, I'm starving). Do not confuse muerto (dead) with muerte (death, a feminine noun).

Examples

"El personaje principal muere al final de la novela."

Natural Translation

The main character dies at the end of the novel.

Literal Translation

The character main dies at-the end of the novel
