mare

sea (poetic/Latin)

noun MAH-reh Rare

Origin: Latin mare (sea)

Usage Note

Mare is the Latin word for 'sea', surviving in Spanish mainly in fixed scientific and place-name compounds rather than as an everyday word — standard Spanish uses mar. Note that mar can be masculine or feminine: el mar in ordinary speech, but la mar in poetic, nautical, and idiomatic usage (la mar de cosas). The everyday word for 'tide' is marea.
