Usage Note
Mantequilla is the standard term for butter in most of the Spanish-speaking world. In some Southern Cone countries (Argentina, Uruguay) manteca is used for butter instead (elsewhere manteca means 'lard/shortening'), so a recipe can cause confusion across dialects. Pan con mantequilla is simply buttered bread; derretir la mantequilla means 'to melt the butter'.
Examples
"Unta un poco de mantequilla en el pan."
Natural Translation
Spread a little butter on the bread.
