Magnitud is used in scientific contexts (earthquake magnitude, stellar magnitude) and figuratively for the scale of an event or problem. Unlike English, it almost always takes a preceding qualifier: de gran magnitud, de esta magnitud. Note the final -d is fully pronounced: 'mahg-nee-TOOD'.
