Usage Note

Luxación is the medical term for the complete displacement of a joint (a dislocation), whereas esguince refers to a sprain. A luxación de hombro ('shoulder dislocation') is a common sports injury. The related verb is luxar ('to dislocate'), though dislocar is also widely used colloquially. Learners should not confuse luxación with fractura (a broken bone).
