llanura

plain, flatland

noun yah-NOO-rah Rare

Usage Note

Llanura denotes a wide, flat expanse of land. It is feminine. The most famous example is la llanura pampeana (the Pampas). Distinguish it from llano (adjective: 'flat'; noun: a smaller plain) — llanura implies greater extent. In geography textbooks it contrasts with meseta ('plateau') and cordillera ('mountain range').

Examples

"Los caballos galopaban por la vasta llanura."

Natural Translation

The horses galloped across the vast plain.
