Usage Note

Insumisión acquired a specific political meaning in Spain during the 1980s–90s: the organised refusal (insumisión) to perform both compulsory military service and the civilian alternative service, as a form of civil disobedience. Insumiso/a is the person who refused. Since conscription ended in 2001 the term is now mainly historical or used in broader contexts of wilful non-compliance.
