infarction

Usage Note

Infarto is the standard medical and colloquial term for a heart attack; the full form is infarto de miocardio. Colloquially, me dio un infarto is used hyperbolically to mean 'it gave me a fright'. Do not confuse with derrame cerebral (stroke) or angina, which is chest pain without infarction.

Examples

"Su padre sufrió un infarto a los sesenta años."

Natural Translation

His father had a heart attack at sixty.
