Usage Note
Independiente is used for political independence (un estado independiente), personal autonomy, and in Spain also for a self-employed or freelance worker (trabajo como independiente). In Latin America freelance or por cuenta propia is more common for the work sense. It does not shorten like gran/buen; the full form is used before and after a noun.
