independencia

independence

noun een-deh-pen-DEN-syah Less Common

Usage Note

Independencia is used both politically (national independence) and personally (personal autonomy). Día de la Independencia varies by country — Mexico celebrates on 16 September, not 4 July as in the US. The adjective independiente and verb independizarse (to become independent) share the root. The word is long enough that learners often misplace the stress.

Examples

"El país celebra su independencia cada año."

Natural Translation

The country celebrates its independence every year.
