Hierba covers both wild grass and culinary or medicinal herbs. The spelled variant yerba is common in Latin America, especially in yerba mate (the herbal tea). The phrase mala hierba literally means 'weed', and the proverb mala hierba nunca muere is roughly 'a bad penny always turns up'.
