noun GEE-ah Less Common

Origin: From Old French guide, of Germanic origin (wītan, to know the way).

directory

Usage Note

Guía is unusual in that it is feminine as a book or document (una guía turística = 'a tourist guide') but can be masculine or feminine as a person (el/la guía). It also means a telephone directory (guía telefónica). The verb guiar means 'to guide'. Do not confuse la guía (the guide/book) with el guía (male guide person).
