Gestación literally means pregnancy or gestation in biology, but is widely used figuratively for the slow development of a project or idea: el proyecto estuvo en gestación durante años. The related verb is gestar (to gestate, to develop). Do not confuse with embarazo, which is the everyday word for pregnancy in humans.
