frívolo

frivolous, flippant

adjective FREE-boh-loh Rare

Origin: From Latin frivolus (trifling, empty).

Also means

trivial, shallow

Usage Note

Frívolo describes a person or activity that lacks seriousness or depth. It often carries a mildly condescending tone (una conversación frívola, un personaje frívolo). The feminine is frívola, and both forms exist in adverbial use via frívolamente. It is a false cognate trap for English speakers: 'frivolous' in law means infundado (unfounded), not frívolo.

Examples

"No seas tan frívolo con este asunto."

Natural Translation

Don't be so flippant about this matter.
