Origin: From Falange (Phalanx), from Greek phalanx, via José Antonio Primo de Rivera's Spanish Falange (1933).

Usage Note

Falangista refers to a member or supporter of the Falange Española, the Spanish fascist political movement founded in 1933 and associated with the Franco regime. As an -ista noun it is invariable for gender. It remains a historically charged term with strongly negative connotations in modern Spain.
