Usage Note

Expandir means to make something larger in size or scope, and can be used reflexively: el negocio se expandió ('the business expanded'). It is a regular -ir verb. A near synonym is ampliar, which is preferred when the expansion is more incremental or quantitative (e.g. expanding a budget or a list).
