Equivaler is an intransitive verb meaning to be equivalent in value, quantity, or meaning, and it always takes the preposition a: un kilómetro equivale a 1000 metros. It is irregular and follows the pattern of valer: equivale, equivalía, equivaldrá. Do not confuse with igualar ('to make equal') or corresponder ('to correspond').
