enjugar

to wipe away

verb en-hoo-GAHR Rare

Also means

to pay off (a debt)

Usage Note

Enjugar has a literal sense of drying or wiping away moisture (enjugar las lágrimas, to wipe away tears) and a financial sense of clearing or paying off a deficit or debt. The spelling change g → gu before e applies: enjugue. It is a more elevated synonym of secar (to dry) in the literal sense, and of saldar in the financial sense.
