Endurecimiento is a deverbal noun from endurecer (to harden). It is used in physical contexts (endurecimiento de las arterias, arterial hardening) and policy contexts (endurecimiento de las sanciones, tightening of sanctions). The stem-change verb endurecer belongs to the -ecer class (c→zc before o/a). The opposite is ablandamiento (softening).
