Usage Note

Ecuación is the standard mathematical term for an equation—a statement that two expressions are equal (ecuación de segundo grado = quadratic equation). Outside mathematics it appears metaphorically in phrases like la ecuación del éxito (the success equation) or una ecuación difícil de resolver (a difficult equation to solve), meaning a complex balancing of factors. The plural ecuaciones is regular.
