Down syndrome

noun DOUN Rare

Origin: From English, after physician John Langdon Down.

Usage Note

Down in Spanish is used exclusively in the medical phrase síndrome de Down, the standard clinical term for trisomy 21. The word is written without italics in established medical use and is pronounced much like the English word. In informal speech the full phrase síndrome de Down is always used; Down alone as a noun is rare outside this compound.
