Usage Note

Desprendimiento is the noun of desprenderse (to come loose, to detach). It has three common uses: a physical detachment such as desprendimiento de retina (retinal detachment) or desprendimiento de tierra (landslide); and the figurative sense of selfless generosity or disinterestedness (actuar con desprendimiento = to act with selflessness). The figurative sense is its most positive register, while the geological/medical senses are neutral.
