céntimo

cent (currency)

noun SEN-tee-moh Rare

Origin: Latin centum (hundred)

Usage Note

Céntimo is the one-hundredth part of the euro (and formerly the peseta). In colloquial speech it is also used in the phrase no tener un céntimo ('to be broke'). Note the written accent on the first syllable marking unusual stress (proparoxytone); without the accent the word would be stressed differently.

Examples

"No me queda ni un céntimo en el bolsillo."

Natural Translation

I don't have a single cent left in my pocket.
