cráter

crater

noun KRAH-tehr Rare

Origin: From Greek kratēr (mixing bowl), later applied to volcanic openings.

Usage Note

Cráter refers to a bowl-shaped depression, whether from a volcano (cráter volcánico) or a meteorite impact (cráter de impacto). The plural is cráteres — note the stress shifts to the penultimate syllable. Do not confuse with crátera, the ancient Greek mixing vessel (a different word).

Natural Translation
