Costar is an o→ue stem-changing verb: cuesta (it costs), cuestan (they cost). The idiomatic phrase costar trabajo means 'to be hard to do', as in me cuesta trabajo levantarme ('I find it hard to get up'). It is used impersonally like gustar: the thing priced is the grammatical subject.
