Origin: Coined from Latin calx (lime, limestone) by Humphry Davy when he isolated the element in 1808.

Usage Note

Calcio is the Spanish word for the chemical element calcium (Ca). It is not to be confused with Italian calcio (football/soccer) — that word does not exist in Spanish. In nutrition it appears in phrases like rico en calcio (rich in calcium). The adjective is cálcico.
