Brote has two common domains: in medicine it means an outbreak of illness (un brote de cólera, 'a cholera outbreak'), and in botany it means a new shoot or sprout on a plant. The verb is brotar ('to sprout, to break out'). Do not confuse brote with estallido, which implies a sudden explosion rather than an emerging spread.
