botar

to bounce, to launch (a boat)

verb boh-TAHR Rare

Also means

to throw out, to discard

Usage Note

Botar has several meanings that vary by region. In Spain it primarily means 'to launch a vessel' (botar un barco) or 'to bounce a ball'. In Latin America, especially the Caribbean and River Plate, it also commonly means 'to throw away' or 'to fire someone' — senses covered in Spain by tirar or echar. Do not confuse with votar ('to vote'), which sounds nearly identical.

Examples
