Autonomía in Spain also refers specifically to one of the 17 comunidades autónomas (autonomous regions) — so la autonomía vasca can mean 'the Basque autonomous community'. In general use it means independence or self-governance. The related adjective is autónomo/a ('autonomous, self-employed').
