arroz

rice

noun ah-RROHS Less Common

Origin: From Arabic ar-ruzz, via Medieval Latin.

Usage Note

Arroz is masculine and its final -z becomes -c before the plural suffix: arroces. It is a staple of countless regional dishes — Spanish arroz con leche (rice pudding) and Latin American arroz a la mexicana (tomato-fried rice). The warning se te pasó el arroz ('your rice is overcooked') is said of someone who has 'left it too late' in life.

Examples
