Usage Note
Aperturismo was coined in Spain during the late Franco era to describe the faction within the regime that favoured gradual liberalisation; it is now used more broadly for any policy of opening up a system. Its counterpart was the hardline inmovilismo. The word carries a distinctly Spanish political register.
