almendra
almond
noun ahl-MEN-drah Rare
Origin: from Latin amyndala, from Greek amygdalē
Usage Note
Almendra is the almond nut; the tree is almendro (masculine). The adjective almendrado/a means almond-shaped, and almendras garrapiñadas are candied almonds, popular at Spanish fairs. Despite the al- opening, the word is not Arabic but Latin (amyndala, from Greek), a deceptive look-alike.
Examples
"Añade unas almendras al yogur por las mañanas."
Natural Translation
Add some almonds to your yogurt in the mornings.
