Usage Note

Alinear means to place things in a line or to bring them into agreement. In a political or strategic context, alinearse con means 'to align oneself with' a position or bloc: el país se alineó con la UE ('the country aligned with the EU'). In sport, alinear can mean to field or select players for a team: el entrenador alineó a tres delanteros ('the coach fielded three forwards'). The reflexive alinearse is common.
